Embedding a Link to an Electronic Document in Moodle

Integrating library resources into Moodle provides direct access to scholarly articles, e-books, educational videos, and other digital content to which the University subscribes.
Through permanent links, Moodle course sites can provide reliable, accessible resources while complying with publishers’ terms of use.

Choose the Right Integration Method

Depending on the type of resource to be shared, there are several possible solutions:

Create a direct link to an electronic resource (an article, an ebook, or a book chapter);
Create a link to a library catalog record;
Embed a video directly;
Embed a PDF directly.

Create a direct link to an electronic resource

Step 1: Access the resource (article, ebook, chapter)
Access the resource through the library catalog: ENT > Library tile.
Accessing the resource through the ENT and then the Library tile provides configured links that enable user authentication and ensure long-term access to the resource.
Step 2: Retrieve the permalink
The URL link to copy and paste is different from a standard link. It includes the UM identifier (“ezpum”) within the URL itself.
Tip: Opening the link in an incognito window allows you to verify that it requires institutional authentication and that it actually directs you to the expected resource.
Step 3: Add the link in Moodle
In the Moodle course, the link can be embedded by adding an “activity or resource,” selecting the “URL link” resource, and pasting the link directly into a text block.

Create a link to a library catalog record

This link takes you to the resource's description in the library catalog.
This is the preferred option for printed books or documents available in multiple formats.

Step 1: Access the University Library catalog record
Access the resource through the library catalog: ENT > "Library" tile > search, then access the university library record.
Step 2: Get the link
Step 3: Add the link in Moodle
In the Moodle course, the link can be embedded by adding an “activity or resource,” selecting the “URL link” resource, and pasting the link directly into a text block.

Embed a video directly

Some platforms allow you to display a video directly on a Moodle page using an embed code (iframe). This method is particularly useful for video resources such as:

JOVE;
Arte Campus;
or any other video platform that offers an embed code.

Step 1: Access the video
Access the resource through the library catalog: ENT > "Library" tile > search, then access the resource.
Step 2: Retrieve the embed code (iframe)
Look for the option: Embed / Share. Copy the link provided. This "embed" link is specific to this video and will ensure it displays correctly on Moodle.
Note: To access the embed link, you may need to create a personal account.
Step 3: Add the embed code to Moodle
In the Moodle course, the link can be embedded by adding an “activity or resource” and selecting the “URL link” resource. Select Tools > Source Code > paste the “embed” link into the HTML.
The video will then appear in Moodle.

Embed a PDF Directly

Step 1: Access the resource (article, chapter)
Access the resource through the library catalog: ENT > "Library" tile > search, then access the resource.
Step 2: Retrieve the PDF file
Step 3: Upload the PDF file to Moodle
In the Moodle course, you can embed a PDF by adding an “activity or resource,” selecting the “file” activity, and then uploading the PDF.
